Who is Building Your House?

Mike Seale

Psalm 127 not only talks about children being a gift from God, but the passage begins, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
Since moving to our neighborhood in 2008, we have watched house after house being built. Right now there are at least three under construction, I’m not sure our neighborhood area has any more lots, literally. It’s fascinating to watch the process and you can see the initial changes almost daily as we are out walking the dog.
After the foundation is poured, it is only a matter of days, (a few weeks) for the house to be framed and the roof to be completed, but it takes months before one is ready to move in. I have read that it takes about seven to eight months to build a six-thousand square foot custom home but only about three weeks to frame it and put a roof on the house. The majority of time is spent on “finer carpentry and finishing items.” The outside may look great, the inside is still under construction. I think you see where I’m headed.

As followers of Christ we need to be more concerned with the internal structure (our hearts) than the external structure. I Samuel 16:7 reminds us that man looks at the outside, but the Lord looks at the heart! David prayed for his son, “…give my son a whole heart to be devoted to your commands.” The Hebrew writer wrote, “For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of all things,” (Heb. 3:4). Who is building your house?
The challenge today is to think of at least one way you can build your house, your temple, your heart for God. Be blessed in your day and in the construction of your house.
