14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a]in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
In this prayer for Ephesians Paul asks for an astounding thing. He wants them to know the love of Christs that surpasses knowledge. How is it possible to know something that is “unknowable”? Have you ever been in the country on a crystal clear night when the countless stars are on full display? God’s creation in its full glory! This creation that fills the sky makes all the men’s works, past, present and future, inconsequential, not worth mentioning. The immeasurable universe was created as an act of love. You were created as an act of love. Every great work is a creation of love. Anything created without love is worthless (1 Corinthians 13:2). Love must be the foundation of what we do. Love is the most powerful force of the universe. The most astounding thing of all is this… The creator wants to fill us with this power in an unending supply that flows into us, and through us into the world.
The world thinks that we are weak because they do not understand real power. In our trials and troubles, in our dark nights of the soul, when we look and think the work we’ve been given is impossibly big, we must pray for more…. LOVE… And He will give us more, immeasurably more.
