Abounding in Love

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Phil. 1:9-11

What do we pray?  In the last devotional thought we talked about our tendency to come to God in prayer with our “shopping list” of requests that we want Him to do for us and for those around us.  That is good, and those prayers are needed, but are our prayers more focused on physical and financial health issues than on spiritual issues.  We want healing from our diseases and relief from our distress, but do we really want a love that abounds in knowledge, insight, and discernment?  Do we really want to produce fruit that brings glory to God?

Paul’s prayer for these Christians in Philippi was that they would have an abounding love.  Is that what we ask God for, or do we spend our prayers asking for deliverance from cancer, heart attacks, or other diseases?  Perhaps if we had that abounding love, our physical problems wouldn’t seem so big, and they might even go away.  It is amazing what the power of a positive mind can do.
