Finding delight in the Lord (his way, his Word, his life) results in the fulfillment or our heart’s true desire. But there is another delight the writer of Psalm 37 mentions. In (37:23-24) he writes, “If the Lord delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble he will not fall, for the Lord will uphold him with his hand.”
This word “delight” is slightly different from the word found in (v.4). Here it means the Lord is pleased or moved by the way we walk; the Lord finds my behavior commendable. Perhaps this is referring to the one mentioned later in (v.31) “The law of God is in his heart; his feet do not slip.” This delight also comes with a promise. If I “stumble” that is to fall short or to fall upon an attack by an enemy, “the Lord upholds me.”
“The Lord’s right hand gives victory, the Lord’s right hand conquers.”
During the time of Thanksgiving we are often asked to name something we are thankful for in our lives. The Psalmist might say, “I am thankful that the Lord upholds me, even when I stumble, even when I fall short and even when I am under attack by the enemy. Be blessed and thankful for the unfailing strength of the Lord’s right hand. (Psalm 118:16) “The Lord’s right hand gives victory, the Lord’s right hand conquers.”
