Astonished and Afraid

By Mike Seale
In Mark 10:32-34 Jesus is very clear on his purpose and direction. I am going to Jerusalem, there I will be betrayed, condemned to die, mocked, spit upon, flogged and killed. The text says his disciples were astonished and others who followed were afraid.

We might ask, “Why would GOD lead us to a place where we are astonished to be or to a place where we are afraid to endure the pain and suffering?” But as the Word says, “GOD has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

This text shows us the courage of Jesus to embrace his GOD designed purpose. There is the kind of courage that is instinctive, a reflex of action when you don’t have time to think. Then the kind of courage that sees what is ahead; difficulties, pain, challenges and costly sacrifices, yet one moves ahead.

We can choose to walk away, avoid where GOD’s Spirit leads us, or we can walk by faith knowing that GOD has and will conquer every obstacle we face. Even death!

The Challenge today is to embrace with courage where you are and surrender what you are facing to the LORD Jesus. Be blessed today as you bear your cross.
