Luke 12:34
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Earthly treasures seem so inviting, yet when we get them, they wither away so quickly. The world tells us “you’ve got to try this”, “you deserve this”, “your life will be so much better if you have this”. It doesn’t matter what the “this” is, the world makes it look and sound so fabulous. The appeals are different for each of us, but Satan never stops baiting his hook with lures to entice us. The problem is, that’s exactly what they are–they are Satan’s hooks to snag us, and he has a tackle box full.
The thing Jesus is telling us in this passage is that all those things won’t last. God knows what we really need, and we will seek Him and make Him our greatest treasure, He will make sure that we have all the other things we really need. He knows our true needs, because He made us and He sustains us.
Let us pray for God’s guidance in our lives that we can focus on the truly enduring things. May God forgive us when we turn aside, and especially when we do that when others are looking to us and following us. May we keep our eyes on the true treasure that is offered to us in Jesus.
