1 John 2:15-17
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
This verse is such a hard lesson that hits home to so many of us. Our natural selfish nature is to love things of this world and to crave praise and approval from others. We fill our lives with things and stuff that we think will fill us up and make us happy, but it only ends up leaving us empty and unsatisfied. So we continue the vicious cycle of trying more and new things of this world thinking that will work, but of course it doesn’t because it is all lies of the Devil.
The truth is only God can fill the hole in our hearts and in our lives. Just like Jesus told the woman at the well how the water at the well will continue to leave her thirsty, but if she drank of the living water she will never be thirsty again. This verse is the same concept. If we die to ourselves daily and take on Jesus as our everything, we will always be filled and we will stop searching. This world and everything will fade away, but our God is forever.
