Philippians 2:1-4

Philippians 2:1-4

Does your life in Christ give you strength? Does his love comfort you? Do we share together in the Spirit? Do you have mercy and kindness? If so, make me very happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and having one mind and purpose. When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others.

What is a Christian about?

Philippians 2 is about unity, about putting others first, and about serving like Jesus served. It’s not about us, it’s about others. Jesus said the mark of true Christians is love for one another. When to live is Christ, then your life is lived for others.

Verse 3 goes against what is valued in the world today-selfish ambition, me against them, me better than them. Paul says “Do not let selfishness or pride be your guide.” It means “Do not live for self”, “Do not think you are better than others.”

The key to unity is humility. C.S. Lewis said, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.”

Jesus showed us the ultimate example, He did not come to show off His deity. The One who made everything—made Himself nothing. God became a servant. He rescued us from the emptiness of self-centered life, and he gave us others. Not to make you happy—so you can make someone else happy.

So, what is a Christian about?

The same thing Christ is about. Others.
