Let’s talk about salt. “Season your grain offerings with salt. DO NOT leave the salt of the covenant of your GOD out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings,” (Lev. 2:13).
Then the verses, “…it is an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD…” (Num. 18:19). “Don’t you know the LORD GOD of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David…forever by a covenant of salt?” (2 Chron. 13:5).
Though salt is seen as a preservative to keep meat fresh, and also as a way to purify it by drawing out the blood (which was forbidden) grain offerings didn’t need preserving and didn’t have blood in them. So what is the “covenant of salt?”
Perhaps this covenant of salt “conveys God’s desire to have a relationship with His people based upon trust that is seen in their actions and, eventually through a changed life.” (Chris Suitt – Covenant of Salt).
Tomorrow we can talk about some of the statements Jesus made about salt, (Matt.5:13; Mark 9:49,50). But for now, The Challenge for us is to reflect upon the covenant we made with Christ when we became married to Him in our baptism, a unifying moment in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ (Rom. 6:3-7) which in fact is the gospel (I Cor. 15:1-4). Be blessed today in the covenant that was seasoned with the love & grace of GOD, the sacrificed blood offering of Jesus and the resurrecting power of the Holy Spirit.
