Three months after leaving Egypt, Israel was given the 10 Commandments. Before receiving these life-giving commands, the people were to consecrate/sanctify themselves. Wash their clothes, abstain from sexual relations to prepare to meet GOD. No one was allowed to touch the mountain as The LORD GOD descended upon it in a cloud, only Moses could go up. GOD spoke to Moses so everyone could hear Him speaking to Moses (Ex.19:9). Lightning, thunder & smoke caused the people to tremble with fear (20:18) as GOD called them to monotheism and to treat one another with love, respect & dignity. “GOD has come to test you so that the fear of GOD will be with you to keep you from sinning,” (Ex.20:20).
Fear has a place in our lives when it comes to God. Paul quotes from Psalm 36:1 “There is no fear of God before their eyes,” (Rom.3:18).
The Challenge today is to close your eyes and imagine the Sinai scene of thunder, lightning and smoke. To reverence GOD as we approach Him in worship with clean hands and a pure heart. Be blessed today as the fear of GOD keeps you from sinning.
